FILM OSCAR/Sundance
"No Country for Old Men," the terrifying tale of a drug deal gone awry, did the expected and took home Oscar gold Sunday night (2/24) as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named it the best picture for 2007. Nominations are announced (1/22) for the 80th Academy Awards. Australian actor Heath Ledger has been found dead (1/22) in New York. The New York Police Department confirmed that Oscar-nominated actor Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment by his housekeeper earlier today. A police spokesman says no foul play is suspected, but he would not comment on media reports that the actor's body was surrounded by pills. The 28-year-old was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Brokeback Mountain. He is survived by a daughter.
The Sundance Film Festival opens (1/17) in Park City, Utah. "The Linguists" was written by Daniel Miller, and was directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel Miller, and Jeremy Newberger. David Harrison and Greg Anderson are subjects of the new documentary. The film highlights their mission to record, study ... and hopefully keep alive ... some of the world's dying languages. Here's more information.

SPORTS
Super Bowl Predictor: According to this quirky indicator, if the New England Patriots (not an "original" NFL team) beat the New York Giants today (2/03), the stock market will have a losing year. The Super Bowl is always surrounded by hype: million dollar commercials, media overkill, elaborate events and more. From Arizona, we report on all the parties, predictions, schemes and scenes leading up to Super Bowl XLII.
Serbia's Novak Djokovic is the 2008 Australian Open men's singles tennis champion (1/27) after coming back from a set down to win in four sets. The third seed beat unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in just over three hours. It is the 20-year-old's first grand slam title. Djokovic was favoured to win but it was Tsonga who started the stronger but the Frenchman's game gradually wilted and while he fought on strongly. Tsonga surprised many by even making the final and says he is proud of his achievement. The result will lift Tsonga into the world top 20.
Italy (Gli Azzurri) won its fourth title after beating France (Les Bleus) 5-3 in a penalty shootout at the end of a drama-filled final which finished 1-1 at the end of extra time in World Cup Berlin (2006/6/9-7/9). But the lasting image will be a vicious headbutt delivered by France's Zinedine Zidane (the retiring master better known as Zizou) to the chest of Italy's Marco Materazzi in the final. Zidane -- ejected in the 107th -- later apologized but said he had no regrets and blamed Materazzi for taunting him. It was the worst display in an ugly tournament, which set records for 345 yellow warning cards and 28 red ejection cards and, at times, outright brutality. Zidane's comeuppance? He was voted player of the tournament, there's a push to award him the Legion d'honneur, and a song titled "Coup de Boule" -- roughly, "head butt" -- has hit the French airwaves. SB115273647730904893
