THE BACK STORY: Annual gatherings of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort town tend to reflect the year's prevailing themes on globalization, and 2008's focus on "collaborative innovation" amid economic insecurity is no different. With fears of recession in the air, seminars like "If America Sneezes, Does the World Still Catch a Cold?" are as likely to make headlines as the host of hot geopolitical issues on the agenda. Stars of the corporate, central banking, government and media worlds will chew over the likes of "Private Equity and Hedge Funds - Friend or Foe?" "Myths and Realities of Sovereign Wealth Funds," and "What Job Should My Child Take in a Globalizing Economy?" Policy questions include peace and stability in Pakistan and Iran and "Suggestions for the Future [U.S.] President," as well as the usual stress on development concerns like "Death, Disease and Dirty Water."
WHAT'S NEXT: While such participants as congressman Barney Frank could make news with talk of the U.S. economic-stimulus package, more esoteric subjects will be in play as well, like the "Science of Eating Smart," the "Wisdom of Storytelling," "Mysteries of the Mind" and ramifications of opening an Abu Dhabi version of the Louvre. And the concluding seminar? "Why Are We Afraid of the Future?"

Climate Change: The Indonesian island of Bali and the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) hosted the largest gathering of climate experts and countries in a decade 2007/12/03-14. The Bali conference aims to address the planet's growing emissions amid warnings the Asia-Pacific region is already suffering rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions. Delegates from 190 countries fought over a successor agreement to the Kyoto protocol. The EU wants rich countries to commit themselves to cut emissions between 25-40% from 1990 levels by 2020, which America is resisting. There was more progress on a deal on "avoided deforestation" — rewarding countries for not chopping down their forests.
