China Became World's Largest Gold Producer In 2007: China has ended more than a century of South African dominance of the gold mining industry to become the world's biggest producer of the ore. Chinese gold output jumped to a record high of 276 tons last year, a 12% increase over 2006, while South Africa produced 272 tons, according to the London-based precious metal consultancy GFMS. China is already the world's biggest producer of aluminum, zinc and lead; the second largest of tin; and among the top 10 in copper, nickel and silver.
Gold futures rose for a fifth session on Monday (1/14) and closed above USD900 for the first time as the dollar fell against a basket of other major currencies, increasing attraction of the precious metal as an investment alternative. Gold futures for February delivery ended up USD5.7, or 0.6%, at USD903.4 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It surged to an all-time high of USD915.9 an ounce earlier in electronic trading. Gold topped USD900 an ounce on Friday (1/11) for the first time. Shanghai Futures Exchange said Saturday (2007/12/29) on its Web site it will launch trading in gold futures on Jan. 9. The exchange said in a statement that one lot is equivalent to 1,000 grams. Shanghai Futures Exchange, one of China's three commodities futures exchanges, now trades copper, aluminum, zinc, natural rubber, and fuel oil futures. Shanghai Gold Exchange currently trades spot gold and spot-deferred gold.

China Shares End Up Led By Gold, Property, Metals Firms
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
January 4, 2008 2:42 a.m. EST
SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--Gold companies gained on expectations of rising inflation and property developers and nonferrous metal makers benefitted from bargain hunting, leading China shares higher Friday (1/04). The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks both A and B shares, ended up 0.8% at 5361.57. The Shenzhen Composite Index rose 0.9% to 1508.64. Analysts said they expect the Shanghai index to test psychological resistance at 5400 Monday.
"It seems that investors have warmed up to the idea of buying stocks again, especially sectors that had recently undergone sharp corrections," said Essence Securities analyst Zhu Haibin.
Gold miners gained sharply Friday, boosted by expectations that inflation will continue to be robust in 2008, and by the launch of gold futures trading on the Shanghai Futures Exchange on Jan. 9.
Many investors view gold as a safe investment during times of high inflation. The research bureau of the central bank estimated last month that China's consumer price index, the country's key inflation gauge, will rise 5.9% in the January-June period, compared with an estimated4.7% increase for all of last year.
Zhongjin Gold hit the 10% upside limit at CNY138.14 and Shandong Gold-Mining also rose 10% to CNY210.76. Property developers and nonferrous metal makers rose on bargain hunting.
"Gold is rising for concrete reasons, but the same can't be said the property and metals sectors. Both rose not because of a change in fundamentals but because the sectors had recently suffered a correction," said Guosen Securities analyst Wang Junqing.
Poly Real Estate Group gained 6% to CNY68.36 after having dropped 21% since mid-December, and Jiangxi Copper rose 8.2% to CNY55.59 after having lost 16% over the same period. PetroChina extended gains on rising oil prices, closing up 0.7% at CNY31.31.
Light, sweet crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange broke through USD100 a barrel earlier this week, and is more than 50% higher than at the start of 2007.
But analysts said they don't expect PetroChina to rise further. "Assuming that oil averages at USD95 this year, my estimation is that this will bring only a CNY0.10-CNY0.20 increase in earnings per share for PetroChina. Any increase is good news, of course, but it's not a huge increase," said Wang Jing, an oil analyst at Orient Securities.

More about METALS & MINING and Gold:
On Friday 25 April, Zijin Mining Group had an eventful debut on the Shanghai stock market. After a weaker-than-expected performance in the morning, it soared to RMB22.00 in the afternoon, more than triple its initial public offering price of RMB7.13, when it was suspended from trading for half an hour because of "abnormal trading," the Shanghai exchange said in a statement. Trading in the shares resumed just minutes before the close, and Zijin ended at RMB13.92, up 95%. Shanghai Stock Exchange officials declined to say whether Zijin's share movement would be investigated. Today (4/28) Zijin hit the 10% downside trading limit when it tumbled to RMB12.53.
